La Catedral de Barcelona

Ihr voller Name lautet "La Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia". Als Gegenstück zu Gaudís modernem Meisterstück finden wir im "Barri Gotic" - dem ältesten Teil Barcelonas - diese Kathedrale, gewidmet, wie der Name sagt, dem Heiligen Kreuz und einer Märtyrerin aus dem 4. Jahrhundert, der Heiligen Eulalia, Schutzpatronin Barcelonas, deren Grab in der Krypta zu finden ist. 

Die erste Basilika wurde an diesem Ort bereits im 4. Jahrhundert errichtet. Sie wurde ca. 600 Jahre später von den Mauren zerstört. Der Bau der heutigen Kathedrale begann im 11. Jahrhundert, doch vollendet sollte sie erst viele Jahrhunderte und Baustile später werden: 1913

Um die 13 Gänse, die im Innenhof des Klosters gehalten werden, ranken sich verschiedene Geschichten: Eulalia soll die Gänse ihrer Familie gehütet haben, die Zahl 13 soll für das Alter stehen, mit dem sie den Märtyrertod erlitt.

Its full name is "La Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia". As a counterpart to Gaudí's modern masterpiece, we find this cathedral in the "Barri Gotic" - the oldest district of Barcelona. As indicated by its name, it is dedicated to both the Holy Cross and a martyr from the 4th century, Saint Eulalia, patron saint of Barcelona whose tomb can be found inside the crypt. 

The 4th century already saw the construction of a basilica at this place. It was destroyed by the Moors about 600 years later. They started to build the present cathedral in the 11th century but it should only be completed many centures and architectural styles later: 1913

There are various stories about the 13 geese being kept in the cloister's inner courtyard: Eulalia is said to have herded her family's geese, while 13 is the age at which she suffered her martyrdom.
